10 Levels of Communication Intimacy

communication_intimacy

Ji Lee, Creative Director for Google Creative Lab in NYC, recently posted an interesting info-graphic titled “10 Levels of Intimacy in Today’s Communication.  By the looks of it, he ranks 10 as the most intimate (face-to-face) and 1 as the least intimate (Twitter-which I wholesale agree with).

The issue  I have is with everything in between.  I think its very dependent on who you are and how you manage your life and network of friends, family and colleagues. I can imagine that in some cases (most for me) Facebook communications are far more intimate then e-mail or even txt messages.  Receiving a personal hand written letter these days is so rare, that I also would rank that above even face-to-face communications depending on the context.

Regardless, I think this is a very nice illustration that embodies the multiple ways people communicate today.  Furthermore, it address the very important matter of our expectations of each channel.  Marketers take note!

Well, there is a huge body of work in experimental psychology which has demonstrated some difference in various communication modalities – but like anything have to be taken with a grain of salt. My guess is that this infographic is arm-chair hooey, not sure what good that continuum brings. As you point out, individuals will be different – and I wold add to that to say that contexts differ as well…I wouldnt bet that Twitter will be around that long – its users will die off and I am told the young peoples dont use it.

Its good for marketing that things keep changing! Cheers
